Magnet Schools

Originally conceived in the 1960’s to abolish racial segregation, Magnet Schools have become specialized schools used to attract families by interest.  Magnet Schools focus on strong academic achievement and vocational skills.

The term “Magnet” is derived from how these schools are allowed to attract students across normal defined boundaries that public schools are held to.  Some Magnet schools are developed by districts to pull kids from within that district whereas others are established by State governments to pull students from multiple districts around an area. There are even multiple special-specific Magnet Schools that exist within a learning center creating what is called a “School within a School” model.

How Magnet Schools Work

Magnet Schools may use an entrance exam, interview process, audition and/or lottery to select their student body.  These schools typically focus on a particular area of study and concentrate on either an academic curriculum or a more hands-on focus in subject areas like technical, vocational, or agriculture.
